End of Module Evaluation

Regarding skill development through this module I aimed to apply my styles of illustrations and technique to different design approaches and briefs, each brief I chose differed from the other, this was my attempt to broaden my experience of applying my work and becoming more familiar with styles of briefs I wasn’t perhaps as confident with working towards but still had a keen interest.

The main skill I feel I developed and would mainly like to not just continue to develop but to apply is working in a craft based environment and producing work freelance, not just the design of the work involved but gaining experience of working in a more freelance based environment, networking with others, working on sale and display and working as a collaborative with some skilled in a field that is not necessarily graphic design.

I feel the reason I enjoyed and benefitted from this the most is that over the course of the summer and the past few months studying, my thoughts to a professional approach and career have shifted from the idea of studio based work and completely rejected the idea of heavy corporate based work, and moved more towards the idea of a completely illustration based freelance design. Working In the independent craft based environment ( such as craft meets, design and craft fairs) and networking with others has given me the chance to meet graduates and illustrators whose success as freelance artists has inspired me heavily.

Another skill I feel I have developed, or shown more interest in, is in the idea of art direction and design for shop front design, although my Ted Baker brief was one of my last and shortest briefs, it was the one I probably enjoyed the most of them all, I was perhaps disappointed that I’d chosen to leave it until last and not allow more time, as I regretted not having the chance to push the execution of the resolution further, rather than just creating a simple 2D illustration representing my ideas I perhaps would have liked to experiment with more 3D based development. This is something I wish to develop further perhaps within the FMP.

I feel perhaps throughout this module my research and development is perhaps the most minimal I’ve conducted throughout projects, I feel perhaps interests outside my studies have perhaps caused me to struggle managing commitment between them, I accept this has greatly affected the outcomes and designs I have produced and know now that I can’t allow this to happen again, this is something I will need to work on, balancing my time and conflicting interests, so that I can still successfully produce and develop work.

Applying my illustrations successfully I feel was the strongest point of my work, I feel though I perhaps didn’t successfully push the development of the resolutions as fair as I could and exploit the possibilities of the outcomes including the illustrations. I feel though, as a strong point I have clarified where I would and would not like to apply my work and briefs to work on.

I feel my development of ideas is the weakest point throughout the module, I’ve severely lacked any large amount of development regarding execution of resolutions also, I know that I must seriously learn from this and realise how and why this has happened, as said above I know that I need to balance out my time and commitments more successfully.

Ted Baker Project Final Design

This is the final design, each of the panel represents a window with the door to the store in the centre, I've chosen a 'wall paper' esque background to convey the family and homely nature of the campaign.

I'm pleased how this turned out and perhaps would like to investigate experimenting with my resolution in a more 3D based practice.

Ted Baker Project

Inspired by my ideas for the shop front, I decided to attempt to illustrate how the final design would look, as creating it whole in 3D would be too costly and time consuming.

Below some of the designs for the 'tea cup' heads.

Ted Baker Project

The ' have a cuppa ted' is the base for the design around this idea, the tagline is catchy and tongue in cheek,  it's simple so it allows the public to understand it within the few seconds of passing by.

I tried to experiment taking my ideas off screen and onto a more tangible field where I can control how they appear, for this I made some rough paper structures and shot them showing how a 3D piece would work.

this idea of simply replacing mannequins heads with tea pots & tea cups is something that would be easily executed and relatively possible to understand to passers by.

Ted Baker Project

Initial ideas for a project based on english humour to attract passers by  via the medium of a shop window display, I liked the idea of sticking with something generically british such as tea/tea cups,  since the display needs to be instantly 'get -able' .

Inspired by Container Plus' structures at the London Design Festival

I like the way these boxes kind of look like sugar cubes, this could be an interesting idea for the 'tea time' idea.

Anorak Design

As I felt the design of the previous cover went successfully, I decided to do a series of 3 more poster designs based on the seasons, summer, spring and autumn, using the same techniques as last time, collecting memories of colleagues and friends regarding nostalgia throughout the seasons.

This is the finished design edit and tidied up, below are variants of the design in different winter based colours.

These are the scans of the first design I created for this poster, using illustrative based type and image to create a collage of all the memories collected.

Anorak Design

Using the idea of memories of being a child in the winter season, I wanted to create a front cover that would reflect the quirky and innocent memories of such a 'magical' time through a childs eyes.

Craft Fair!

Debuting our new finished products at the craft fair in Brigg this weekend, we decorated and prepared our stall, I think the stall looks fantastic and it really drew it potential customers, perfectly topped off with a selection of cakes baked by alex!
