End of Module Evaluation

Regarding skill development through this module I aimed to apply my styles of illustrations and technique to different design approaches and briefs, each brief I chose differed from the other, this was my attempt to broaden my experience of applying my work and becoming more familiar with styles of briefs I wasn’t perhaps as confident with working towards but still had a keen interest.

The main skill I feel I developed and would mainly like to not just continue to develop but to apply is working in a craft based environment and producing work freelance, not just the design of the work involved but gaining experience of working in a more freelance based environment, networking with others, working on sale and display and working as a collaborative with some skilled in a field that is not necessarily graphic design.

I feel the reason I enjoyed and benefitted from this the most is that over the course of the summer and the past few months studying, my thoughts to a professional approach and career have shifted from the idea of studio based work and completely rejected the idea of heavy corporate based work, and moved more towards the idea of a completely illustration based freelance design. Working In the independent craft based environment ( such as craft meets, design and craft fairs) and networking with others has given me the chance to meet graduates and illustrators whose success as freelance artists has inspired me heavily.

Another skill I feel I have developed, or shown more interest in, is in the idea of art direction and design for shop front design, although my Ted Baker brief was one of my last and shortest briefs, it was the one I probably enjoyed the most of them all, I was perhaps disappointed that I’d chosen to leave it until last and not allow more time, as I regretted not having the chance to push the execution of the resolution further, rather than just creating a simple 2D illustration representing my ideas I perhaps would have liked to experiment with more 3D based development. This is something I wish to develop further perhaps within the FMP.

I feel perhaps throughout this module my research and development is perhaps the most minimal I’ve conducted throughout projects, I feel perhaps interests outside my studies have perhaps caused me to struggle managing commitment between them, I accept this has greatly affected the outcomes and designs I have produced and know now that I can’t allow this to happen again, this is something I will need to work on, balancing my time and conflicting interests, so that I can still successfully produce and develop work.

Applying my illustrations successfully I feel was the strongest point of my work, I feel though I perhaps didn’t successfully push the development of the resolutions as fair as I could and exploit the possibilities of the outcomes including the illustrations. I feel though, as a strong point I have clarified where I would and would not like to apply my work and briefs to work on.

I feel my development of ideas is the weakest point throughout the module, I’ve severely lacked any large amount of development regarding execution of resolutions also, I know that I must seriously learn from this and realise how and why this has happened, as said above I know that I need to balance out my time and commitments more successfully.
